“They are coming,” said Phyllis Ershowsky, interim city spokeswoman. “It’s good for the community and good for the golf community.”
Topgolf venues feature golf with climate-controlled playing bays, along with an extensive food and drink menu, televisions and music that make for a party atmosphere.
Florida locations are in Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville, with others opening in Miami Gardens and Doral.
The Fort Myers location will be near Colonial Boulevard and Ben C. Pratt/Six Mile Cypress Parkway, not far from Eastwood Golf Course, according to the city, but a specific address and a time frame for the project could not be determined.
“We are actively pursuing a location in Fort Myers but I don’t have any details I can share quite yet,” Morgan Wallace, a Topgolf spokeswoman, wrote in an email. “We are so excited for the future potential to join the Fort Myers community!”
Alico Family Golf owner Kraig Feighery said he’s excited about Topgolf coming to Southwest Florida because it gets people thinking about the sport. He also has been in contact with Topgolf officials over the past few months.
“I’m happy, I’m very happy,” he said. “I think we’ll see about a 10-15 percent spike in our business. This will bring so many people to come out to AFG and learn, practice and play.
“Topgolf brings so many people over to the game through food and beverage. Then they’ll come over to us. We’ve broken down the barriers with cost, time and difficulty. Players can do almost anything in our facility in half an hour.
“In this day and age, we need to work together and get the word out about golf.”
